The Erotic Romance Scavenger Hunt

The Erotic Romance Scavenger Hunt is a blog hop featuring nineteen authors, a ton of exclusive material and fantastic giveaways, and an amazing grand prize for one lucky scavenger hunter.

Just joined the hunt? Click here to start from the beginning. (Also, this is where my exclusive content is hosted, so check it out for a nice, long excerpt of my June release, Equation For Love!)

RULES: Hidden within each post on the hunt will be a single letter that is red. Jot those letters down because they're part of the following mystery phrase you'll need to unscramble:

_ _ _ _ I _ _     _ _ _ _ _ _ _     _ _ R     _ _ _ _

At the bottom of each post will be a link to your next stop on the hunt. Once you've completed the hunt, read all the fantastic exclusive material and entered all the individual giveaways, unscramble the letters you collected to reveal the mystery phrase. When you've uncovered the phrase, fill out the entry form in order to qualify for the grand prize. Grand prize is open internationally. You must be 18 or older to enter.

The hunt will only be open for 72 hours so play fast! Entries sent without the correct phrase or without contact information will not be considered. All entries must be received by May 28 at noon Central Time.

On with the hunt!

Today, I have the pleasure of hosting Mary Calmes! Check out her exclusive content below.

Mary Calmes currently lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, with her husband and two children and hopes to eventually move off the rock to a place where her children can experience fall and even winter. She graduated from the University of the Pacific (ironic) in Stockton, California, with a bachelor's degree in English literature. Due to the fact that it is English lit and not English grammar, do not ask her to point out a clause for you, as it will so not happen. She loves writing, becoming immersed in the process, and falling into the work. She can even tell you what her characters smell like. She also buys way too many books on Amazon.

Live and Learn
Sometimes my life just sort of happened. I didn't make plans and it turned out weird. Like, I didn't even want to leave the house and there I was at Aquarius, watching my boyfriend Cord Powers dance with an old lover. It wasn't my idea of a good time. I was trying to drink myself through it. Jeff, one of Cord's oldest friend's, had come by, and I had tried to drill him for everything he knew about Hunter Raul. Instead of just spilling, though, he had to tell me how glad he was to see me and how happy he was that Cord and I were together and how good Cord looked.

Super.

That was all great but I wanted the dirt on my boyfriend and Hunter.

"I've never seen him so head over heels, Rob."

Fantastic, but I really wanted to know about Hunter.

It was like pulling teeth. He finally got out that every time Hunter was in town, he and Cord were inseparable for the entire length of his stay. I could tell he didn't enjoy giving me the information and I was kind of touched. It turned out that Jeff was a better friend to Cord than I had thought, and it seemed like he wanted to be mine too. He was being protective of my boyfriend while at the same time showing concern for my feelings. It was nice. He sat with me a long time, making sure I always had a drink.

Apparently, Jeff explained, Hunter and Cord went back a long way and had an unspoken agreement about hooking up whenever possible. So as soon as Hunter hit town, he would go from club to club until he found Cord and he would cut in, pull him off the dance floor and that would be it. The ritual seemed to include screwing in a bathroom stall to get reacquainted, and Cord would just basically disappear for weeks at a time until Hunter left for home or his next modeling shoot. Once he was gone, Cord became, once again, a fixture on the party and club scene.

I hated the story, I hated that Cord was dancing with him just for fun, and I hated most of all that I was jealous. I could taste it in my mouth. Just watching Hunter Raul with his hands all over my boy was taking the air slowly out of the room. The fact that it was my fault was not helping. To appear confident and nonchalant, I had basically pushed Cord into the other man's arms. I was acting so blasé that I had everyone impressed with how secure I was, even my buddy David who had come along with us on the outing. I thought he knew me better, but he had no idea I was twisted up inside.

"Jesus, Rob, they look fuckin' hot together."

David was right. They were both tall and golden and covered in rippling muscles from strenuous gym workouts. They looked like what they were, models. Hunter apparently did most of his work in Europe, where he was the darling of the very biggest names in fashion. It was easy to see why. His features looked like they were chiseled out of marble, so sharp and perfect. His eyes were bright blue and his dirty blond hair was streaked with gold and copper, hanging down thick and long to the middle of his back. He moved the same way Cord did with that fluid, feline grace. The longer I watched them the worse I felt, seeing how well they fit. I wished I'd worn different clothes. Anything that would have gotten me noticed, something more fashionable or much less, either way making an impact, all designer labels or jeans and a skin tight T-shirt. I felt bulky under my layers; t-shirt, dress shirt, v-neck sweater, and the cast from my car accident a week before made me lopsided and clumsy. I couldn't dance the way I usually could, so I'd elected not to. I was standing against the wall watching and when Hunter pulled Cord back against him and I saw the guy that slept in my bed smile wide and let him, I decided I needed another drink. This would be the fifth. I was hoping to feel better any second. When I turned toward the bar, I saw David.

"What?" I yelled at him over the dance music.

He moved over next to me and put a hand on the side of my neck and his mouth close to my ear. "You look like you need some air."

"No, just more alcohol."

He shook his head, his hand sliding around the back of my neck. "No, come out to the patio and get some fresh air. You need to clear your head."

So I let him put his arm around my neck, pull me close and lead me outside to the crowded patio. We found a table and he sat down beside me. I closed my eyes and breathed in the crisp night air.

"You feel better?" He asked, hand on my leg.

"Yeah, thanks."

"You wanna go? I'll drive you home."

"I can't leave without Cord."

"Maybe Cord wants to stay here with Hunter."

I slouched down in the chair, which inadvertently moved his hand up higher on my thigh. "Knock it off. You know he doesn't."

"Why doesn't he?"

"Cause he loves me and wants to come home with me."

"Oh, that's right. It's only been like a couple months but he loves you."

I smiled because the sarcasm was just dripping off of him, and I was a little drunk. "Quit."

"New plan," he said softly, leaning forward so his breath was warm on my ear, down the side of my neck. "I'll take you home with me. Cord can come by later and pick you up."

"I know you think I'm stupid, but I promise you I'm really not."

"You need someone to take care of you."

"That's me," I heard Cord say from above me. I opened my eyes and looked up at him. "I take care of him. Get up, lemme sit there."

David stood and touched my hair before he walked away. Cord took his seat and put his hands on my chest.

"You better finish dancing." I almost growled at him, my voice thick with anger. "And don't touch me," I snapped, trying to brush him away.

He laughed, leaning closer, smoothing the back of his fingers down my throat. "I am finished."

"No you're not," I said irritably. "I saw you. You're having a great fuckin' time."

"Serves you right, asshole," and he smiled wide when he said it, kissing my ear. When he breathed out I felt the shiver slice through me. It felt so good. He chuckled and it was deep. I heard the very satisfied, very masculine sound in his laughter like he knew he had me. "You don't send your partner off to dance with an old lover, no matter how cool and unaffected you wanna look."

I tried to sit up but he wouldn't let me. "I wasn't trying to look––"

"Yeah, ya were," he cut me off, sliding out of his chair and into my lap. He straddled my hips, pushing his groin into my abdomen. "You're trying to show everybody how much you don't care."

"I care," I grumbled, glaring at him. "Get off me."

He shifted in my lap. "No."

I stared into his eyes, into all that dark, glittering green.

"You trusted me not to do anything but dance with him."

"That's right. I do trust you."

"I know, but that doesn't mean you gotta make me do stuff you're gonna hate watching."

I shrugged. "I don't know how to play this game."

"It's not a game," he smiled at me, pressing his ass into my groin. "If you feel like saying no, say no."

"But that's not fair to you."

"That's ridiculous. It's one thing if you're not around and I go do something on my own. It's another thing all together if you're here and you tell me to go dance and I do and then you get mad. That's just plain stupid."

"I don't own you, Cord. You do what you want."

"Is that right? Whatever I want?"

And I wanted to be mad because I was jealous. I could barely breathe but at the same time there was heat between us, and he felt so good in my lap. When he leaned forward, his mouth on my throat, I lifted so he could reach more of me.

"I've never seen you jealous before," he chuckled, kissing a line from my jaw to the back of my ear. I trembled under him. "And even though seeing you all flustered is a huge turn on, I don't want you to ever feel this way again. There's no reason for it. You're the only one I will ever sleep with again."

I let out a deep breath as he sat back to look at me.

"I love you."

I stared into his eyes as he held me, my face in his hands.

"C'mon," he smiled lazily, rising so I could get up. "Let's go."

"Cord?" I asked, following behind him as we made our way through the crowd.

"What?"

"You don't miss all this? All the clubbing and the partying?"

"No," he said as we got to the coatroom and he passed the guy the claim check "I wouldn't have even danced with Hunter, except that you insisted."

"How come you don't miss it?"

He shrugged. "'Cause I did it for so long."

"So what's exciting to you, then?"

He glanced at me. "You and me. That's exciting."

No doubt about it, I was an idiot. "I'm so stupid," I confessed when he gave me my peacoat.

"This is what I've been saying," he agreed way too quickly, grinning in that way that lit up his eyes. He squeezed my shoulder and then steered me out the front door. When I was outside on the sidewalk, I took a deep breath. It hurt just a little.

"Ribs sore?" He asked me, stepping to the curb to hail a cab.

They were, still. I was bruised all over from the accident along with my broken arm. "No."

He scowled at me. "I told you we shouldn't have come out tonight. You should be home, lying in bed, watching TV."

"But I don't wanna keep you home, bored out of your mind."

"As long as you're there, I'm good."

"But I––"

"Cord!"

We both turned as Hunter came walking down the street toward us.

"Where you going?" He asked, hand going out toward Cord. You could tell he was used to touching him whenever he wanted. They had that familiarity that lovers have, that way around each other that let you know without being told that they were more than just friends. "I turned around and you were gone."

Cord took the smallest step sideways, just out of reach, so subtle a movement, so telling at the same time. Hunter's scowl was instant, his eyes darkened. Even in the street under neon you could tell. When his hand reached for Cord's face, my boyfriend tilted sideways just enough so Hunter came up short.

"What's going on?"

"We're gonna go home," Cord smiled at him. "My boy's on the mend, as you can see."

"What?" Hunter was confused. "You don't wanna dance anymore?"

"No," Cord assured him, smiling easily. "So I'll see ya around."

"What?" He repeated, clearly confused about what was happening.

"Take care all right?" Cord said, offering his hand to shake.

Hunter looked at him. "I'm not gonna see you?"

Cord put his hand up under my coat since it was obvious Hunter wasn't going to take it, and fisted it in the back of my sweater. "No, you will. I'm sure we'll run into each other again before you leave, or gimme a call and the three of us can grab some dinner."

"Yeah but––" he stopped himself, glancing around quickly. "Oh," and it was like he really saw me for the first time. "Okay. Whatever man," he shrugged, turning around and walking back toward the club.

Obviously he thought it was Cord's loss.

"Hey," I reached out for my boyfriend's shoulder.

"What?"

"He's just being a dick because he's upset."

He looked at me like I was nuts. "What?" Brows furrowed, scowling.

"I mean, Hunter acting like it was no sweat off his back if you were with him or not. I mean, we both know he's pissed as hell that he doesn't get to spend time with you."

One golden eyebrow rose as he looked at me. "I could give a shit what he thinks, Rob. Christ, the crap you think I care about."

"I'm sure he'll try and call you to––"

"No," he cut me off. "Hunter has way too much pride to ever speak to me again after that."

"Sorry."

He gave me a look. "You obviously need rest."

"You seriously don't care?"

"No, why would I care?" He was at a complete loss.

"You guys were friends a long time."

"We were never friends."

"But you were lovers."

He was scowling at me. "So? How does that make us close?"

"It makes us close."

"It's not the same. You and I are together."

I just didn't get that. But I didn't understand the whole casual sex thing either. Friends with benefits… none of that had ever made any sense to me. "You and Hunter weren't––"

"No, Rob, it was nothing."

It always meant something when I slept with anyone. We were made different.

"What?"

I shook my head.

"You think ‘cause I slept around before that I could do it again?"

"No."

He nodded. "C'mon, let's go home."

In the cab, after a few minutes of giving him space, I moved back over beside him, my knee, my thigh, and my shoulder all pressing against him.

"I wondered why you were sitting so far away," he breathed against my ear.

"I didn't want to crowd you."

"Crowd me," he whispered, his hand on my thigh.

I leaned into him and he put his arm around my neck and his hand in my hair. I started to relax, and when he laid his cheek on the top of my head, I closed my eyes.

"Thanks for coming with me instead of staying to dance with Hunter," I teased him.

"Shut-up," he said gruffly.

"Do me a favor and don't dance with anyone who wants to sleep with you anymore, okay?"

"Agreed," he said, and I could hear the smile in his voice as he rubbed his cheek and then his chin in my hair. "And you don't offer up my services."

"I won't. I know better now."

"I love you, Robert Owens."

My head fell back on his shoulder so he could reach my mouth. "I love you back."

"I know," he chuckled as he bent and kissed me.

Teaser for you all!

I'm currently about 2/3rds done with book number 2 in my Crux Ansata space western series.  So I thought I'd share the song that I'm currently listening to on repeat because it fits the book so perfectly.

The song is titled Runnin' and it's by the amazing Adam Lambert.  If you only know him as 'That Idol contestant who didn't win Season 8' then I urge you to rethink and take a trip over to the MuchMusic website where you can stream the full Trespassing album (including Runnin) right now!

You can also hear it on this youtube video:

Here are the lyrics, for those who aren't interested in actually hearing the best song in the freaking world at the moment lol:

Steel to my trembling lips
How did the night ever get like this?
One shot and the whiskey goes down, down, down
Bottom of the bottle hits
waking up my mind as I throw a fit
The breakin’ is takin’ me down, down, down

My heart’s beating faster
I know what I’m after

I’ve been standing here my whole life
Everything I’ve seen twice
now it’s time I realized
it’s spinning back around now
On this road I’m crawlin’
save me cause I’m fallin’
now I can’t seem to breathe right
cause I keep runnin runnin runnin runnin
runnin runnin runnin runnin!!!!!!
runnin from my heart!

‘Round and around I go
Addicted to the numb livin’ in the cold
The higher, the lower, the down, down, down
Sick of being tired and sick
and ready for another kind of fix
The damage is damning me down, down, down

My heart’s beating faster
I know what I’m after

I’ve been standing here my whole life
Everything I’ve seen twice
now it’s time I realized
it’s spinning back around now
On this road I’m crawlin’
save me cause I’m fallin’
now I can’t seem to breathe right
cause I keep runnin runnin runnin runnin
runnin runnin runnin runnin!!!!!!
runnin from my heart

Whoa, I’m coming alive
Whoa, I’ll wake up now and live
Whoa, I’m coming alive
A life that’s always been a dream
I’ll wake up now and live

I’ve been standing here my whole life
My heat’s beating faster
I know what I’m after

I’ve been standing here my whole life
Everything I’ve seen twice
now it’s time I realized
it’s spinning back around now
On this road I’m crawlin’
save me cause I’m fallin’
now I can’t seem to breathe right
cause I keep runnin runnin runnin runnin
runnin runnin runnin runnin!!!!
runnin from my heart
cause I keep runnin runnin runnin runnin
runnin runnin runnin runnin
runnin from my heart

So yeah.  No snippets (because the first book isn't even out yet, I can't share bits of the second book yet) but this is a little teaser to give you an idea of the vibe.  It's current working title (meaning not publisher-approved title) is Runaway Sky.

Enjoy!

Erotic Romance Scavenger Hunt - Coming Soon!

The Erotic Romance Scavenger Hunt is a collaboration between m/m and m/f erotic romance authors, and an event inspired by the YA Scavenger Hunt. The hunt will feature exclusive bonus material from each author as well as clues for readers to collect. Unscramble the clues to reveal a mystery phrase, and enter to win TWENTY books, one from each author in the hunt.

Rules and Guidelines

The Erotic Romance Scavenger Hunt will run May 25, 2012 - May 27, 2012.

Readers will be given a starting point. From there, they'll be directed from blog to blog, enjoying bonus material along the way and hopefully discovering some fantastic new authors to read. Hidden within each post on the hunt will be a single letter that is red. Jot those letters down because they're part of a scrambled phrase.

CONTEST DETAILS:

• Open internationally
• Provide a working email with your entry. Incomplete entry forms will not be considered.
• Only one entry per person (one duplicate entry will be considered a mistake and deleted without penalty; more than one will result in disqualification).

New cover art!!

I'm so excited about this one. I actually came up with the design and details for this cover and the publisher liked my ideas so much he used them to replicate my cover idea and give me exactly what I wanted.  I couldn't be more pleased!  So, without further ado, I give you the cover for my June 24th release from Amber Quill Press - EQUATION FOR LOVE:

Isn't it beautiful?  That's Liam, hero #2, being unfalicious all over that hot cover. Skye, my geeky little math nerd, would be mortified at the idea of being shirtless on a book cover lol. Oh well, we can all just daydream about it instead.

Here's the blurb for the story, for those who haven't heard it yet:

Sex + money shouldn’t = love, but since when does the heart follow any laws but its own?

Recent college graduate and mathematical genius Skye McCord is determined that this summer he is going to do something he’s always wanted to try. Living. And, as a scientist, he’s not leaving anything to chance. He’s got a new job in Las Vegas, a signing bonus burning a hole in his pocket and what else does a brainy geek spend his money on but an education? This time of the carnal variety.

Liam Maddox isn’t your ordinary gay male escort – he’s actually gay, and he really loves his job. Especially when he meets his newest client. Skye’s cute and awkward and sort of odd, and when he informs Liam that he wants to hire him to teach him everything he needs to know about being gay, well…Liam’s too intrigued to say no.

Except what starts as light-hearted lessons in sex and seduction quickly becomes more as Liam begins to tap into a submissive side of Skye the young man never knew he had. Liam’s never been this drawn to anyone before, and he’s beginning to wonder if he can walk away when their time is up. Does happily ever after exist for someone like Liam with someone like Skye?

Can't wait for release day, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Plotting vs Pantsing - A post for the writers

This one's for the writers or for readers who are interested in the process of how we write our books. :)

I'm curious about how other writers do it. So I want you to show me!

I'm new to plotting. I've always, always been a pantser, but I've reached the point in my career where flying by the seat of my pants is asking for trouble (though large as those pants are, I'm sure I'd get decent airlift), and so I've begun a sort of hybrid plotting/pantsing. I basically loose outline, chapter by chapter. Look, I have visual aids and everything (slightly blurred for privacy sake):
Yeah, my handwriting really is that bad. Anyhow, that's my current WIP, it's four pages from a smallish notebook, one-side only, stapled together and kept on my desk at hand. Each chapter gets a brief paragraph of the events I want/need to happen, and then as I write I highlight out the bits I've written. If I wanted, I suppose I could skip around and write other bits out of order, but just the thought makes me break out in hives. I also keep track of my timeline with this, as you can see in the circled bits, because I have the worst time remembering what day of the week it is in real life, let alone trying to keep track in storyline too!

But I keep the outline loose enough that my characters have a lot of free reign within the chapter's bare bones outline. Like I'll sktch out a chapter as: "N finds out K is following him. Afterwards, they have sex." So I don't tell myself or plan how N is going to react to finding out that information or even how he finds out, I just know this is where he needs to do so. So I can still pants some, which keeps it fun for me.
I'm curious how other people do it. Take a screencap or a pic with your phone or whatever, and share! Do you use a program? Are you oldschool scribbling it out like me, some other way I don't know about?

Soothing the savage beast

Welcome to Whatever Wednesday!  I'm probably going to be going off the rails of the pre-scheduled three times a week posting because I find sometimes I just don't feel like talking about character models on Mondays or Snippets on Saturdays, so we'll see whether I continue to have pre-planned topics or whether I just go wild and start rambling about anything and everything to you guys! LOL

Today I want to talk about how we deal with stress. I'm including the beautiful picture over there (courtesy of Ekatarina Zakharova) because don't we all need some eye-candy in our daily lives?

Anyway, I'm currently in a super-anxious state, waiting for something to arrive in my mail box that is basically going to tell me if the last two years and the future one and a half years of work is going to be all worth it.  Nervous!  So I'm trying to work out ways to ease the anxiety so I can still do other things while I wait for this major thing.

I still have deadlines to meet and words to write and I just got a couple new projects on my author's plate that I'm percolating while I do other stuff - it's a lot to think about all at once under normal circumstances.  It's made even more difficult because all my silly brain seems to want to think about is the anxiety-inducing thing.

What do you guys do to de-stress or take your mind off something that's worrying you?  I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, anxious and excited and a little nervous hoping I'm going to get just what I asked Santa for.  Soothing that stress beast is hard! Especially since I'm on a diet and can't turn to chocolate lol.

Leave a comment, tell me how you de-stress.  I'd love some suggestions as I stalk the mailbox. :)
